The function of the basilica was exclusively dedicated to business and justice.
This building, richly decorated, was built in 179 BC by Æmilius Paulus and maintained
for a long time by this family. In the south east corner, an adjunction towards the
Forum was called “monuments of Lucius and Gaius Cæsar”.
It’s at this place that one can see an inscription
in the honour of Lucius and Caius Cæsar, grandsons of Augustus who had adopted them,
giving them the title of “Princes of Youth”. They died prematurely. Jacques Plassard
suggests his vision in a synthetic picture.
