Jacques Plassard
is presenting the southern façade of the Basilica Æmilia. The building measured 94 m by 24 m. Inside were two colonnades built over each other,
corresponding to the double outside arcades.
The south-east end of the Basilica, where appears more visibly in the foreground the monument of Lucius and Caius Cæsar.
Inside the ionic columns were made of black, red and green African marble,
the corinthian columns were green and white. A wooden ceiling covered as well
the whole width of the colonnades. It was in 159 BC that was set up in
the first basilica a water-clock, which was at that time a great progress to
measure the time. This remarkable reconstruction lets us even more
regret the time gone.
