The funeral stele is a short pillar, sometimes round, but most of the time rectangular, erected as a tombstone on the place where a person is buried, or used as a tomb to hold his ashes after they had been collected from the stake, for those who could not afford a more imposing construction. One sees here the funeral stele erected to honour Emperor Claudius, Claudius himself was buried in Augustus’ Mausoleum. (The indication pomœrial actually means that it was built in the Pomœrium, an area situated outside the city wall and kept for the cult, where no construction was allowed).
