The Roman civil basilica is used together as a court, a commodities exchange,
and a strolling place. It is primarily a judicial hall. The first basilica was
built to free the Forum from all the courts that cluttered it up. It’s in the
Basilica Julia in the centre of the picture, that the Centumvirs used to sit
(old Roman court composed of 105 members). But it’s also a business meeting place.
Under its outside porticoes, shops were set up. Inside,
money changers and bankers might have a place in the aisles.
The upper galleries were a strolling place for idle peole.
It was a vast rectangle, 109 m long,and 40 m wide.
Inside, three rows of columns on the four sides surrounded a nave,
82 m long and 8 m wide.
